Comparison of a silverplate lid polished and unpolished.   Silverplate lid
  • Left side is oxidized with years of neglect.
  • Right side is polished.
  • Polishing silver plate depends on the condition of the silver plate. In this example, the silver plating was in excellent condition considering it is about 130 years old.
  • Polished.

fivesilverspoons   Five early 19th century spoons
                        (circa 1820, coin silver)
  • The four spoons on the left were severely dented, dinged, and misshappen from 190 years of use and neglect.
  • The right spoon was actually cracked and bent.
  • All the spoons were passed down together as a "set" but they are not a matching pattern.
  • Spoons were carefully restored by reshaping the spoon bowls, soldered as necessary and polished.
  • While I would not normally polish 200 year old silver this shiny, it was necessary because of the severe damage.
