Window of Isolation, Cage of My Own Construction

This sculpture resonates with new meaning in the time of COVID-19. 30 years after this artwork was made, it reflects on the message behind this work. Originally, I constructed this artwork to narrate the isolation of being a mother at home, alone, taking care of two children. Entire days, isolated and busy but alone. That is what echoes and resonates at this moment in the time of a pandemic. With the COVID-19 social distance self-enforced isolation, many of us spend days by ourselves lacking company, not unlike my days of early motherhood.

This isolation also reminds me of care takers for Alzheimer’s and memory loss patients that echo time in endless days of patience, reminded about the past, and concerned for the future.

There was another significance to this “pedestal for a woman to stand on.” This box, this pedestal for womanhood, is really a cage.

Pre-printed steel from recycled vintage dollhouses side and windows; brass construction.

14" height x 10.5" width x 10.5" depth

This sculpture ships in one custom made box.
